The State of Wisconsin has determined that appearing before a notary via webcam or on the computer, is illegal. Any notarizations done in this format are not legally notarized documents.
A company called Notary Now is advertising this service and makes claims they are legal. Their home state of New Jersey has also declared these types of notarizations to be illegal.
Webcam notarizations are not to be confused with esignatures, which are legal. If a notary is required for those documents, they should be sitting next you. Wisconsin law states that you must appear in person before a Wisconsin commisioned notary or attorney, with a current, valid ID that has been issued by a Government entity. A drivers license, a voter ID card or a passport. It must have your picture and your signature on it.
